AMD, Qualcomm and Apple unlikely to deliver 'clean beats' - Lynx Equity Strategies May 1, 2024

As AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) prepare to disclose their earnings reports, analysts at Lynx Equity Strategies are cautious. With expectations tempered, the consensus points towards cautiously positive earnings announcements, albeit without the anticipated "clean beats."

"We expect the earnings events this week from AMD, QCOM and AAPL to be cautiously positive, but none of them clean beats," the firm wrote.

Drawing attention to recent warnings from TSM regarding the sluggish recovery of smartphones and PCs, Lynx Equity Strategies sees potential implications for AMD's client segment and Qualcomm's smartphones, although Apple's iPhones and Macs may be less affected.

Despite low investor expectations potentially benefiting AMD, Lynx advises against taking positions ahead of the earnings events due to the likelihood of heightened volatility. The looming macroeconomic data releases further cloud the outlook, adding to the uncertainty surrounding investor reactions.

While acknowledging the possibility of positive commentary on AMD's Data Center segment, particularly regarding the non-AI server portion and the Embedded segment, Lynx remains cautious about the Client PC segment, expressing a negative view.

The upcoming earnings reports also prompt considerations about the competitive landscape, with Lynx highlighting potential challenges for AMD's premium PCs and the impact of Windows on ARM PCs on x86 architecture.

As investors brace for the earnings disclosures from these tech giants, Lynx Equity Strategies' cautious outlook underscores the complexities and challenges facing the semiconductor and technology sectors amidst evolving market dynamics and shifting consumer preferences.
